The short answer, the exact math, and the one rule most people get wrong.
Zakat on 1 tola (11.66 grams) of 24K gold is 2.5% of its market value on your zakat date โ roughly Rs 6,996 at an assumed rate of Rs 24,000/gram (October 2026). Run your exact numbers in the free zakat calculator with today's actual rate, because the answer moves with the gold price.
All figures use an assumed rate of Rs 24,000/gram (October 2026). Gold rates move daily โ always re-check the rate on your own zakat date:
| Gold held | Weight | Value @ Rs 24,000/g | Zakat (2.5%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 tola (24K) | 11.66 g | Rs 279,840 | Rs 6,996 |
| 1 tola (22K jewelry) | 10.69 g pure | Rs 256,520 | Rs 6,413 |
| 1 tola (21K jewelry) | 10.20 g pure | Rs 244,860 | Rs 6,122 |
| 1 tola (18K jewelry) | 8.75 g pure | Rs 209,880 | Rs 5,247 |
Here's the part that changes the answer. Zakat is only due if your total zakatable wealth reaches nisab โ and 1 tola of gold on its own does not reach the gold nisab:
Many scholars (and Pakistan's official zakat framework) use the lower silver nisab, which brings far more people into giving. On the silver nisab, 1 tola of gold easily qualifies โ so in practice, most Pakistanis holding 1 tola of gold do owe zakat on it. The honest answer depends on which nisab you follow: the zakat calculator lets you run both and shows which one applies to you.
And remember: nisab is tested against your entire zakatable wealth โ gold plus cash, savings, silver, investments, and business assets, minus debts. The gold itself is only one line of that total.
Zakat is always calculated on pure (24K) gold content. Pakistani jewelry is usually 22K or 21K, so convert first: multiply the weight by karat รท 24.
Mixed set? Weigh each karat separately, convert each to 24K-equivalent, then add them up before applying 2.5%.
2.5% of its market value on your zakat date โ about Rs 6,996 for 24K gold at an assumed Rs 24,000/gram. Jewelry karats pay less (22K โ Rs 6,413, 21K โ Rs 6,122, 18K โ Rs 5,247) because zakat counts only pure gold content.
On the gold nisab (87.48g), no โ 1 tola alone doesn't reach it. On the widely used silver nisab (~Rs 171,000), yes โ 1 tola of gold exceeds it. Most Pakistanis follow the silver nisab, so zakat is typically due.
Yes, per the majority Hanafi opinion dominant in Pakistan โ personal-use jewelry counts toward zakatable wealth.
Always the current market (sell) rate on your zakat due date, never the purchase price.
Convert to pure gold first: weight ร 22 รท 24, then value it at the current 24K rate per gram, then take 2.5%. One tola of 22K = 10.69g pure gold.
